Everything you need - requirements on the left, exact steps on the right.

System requirements
  • • Google Chrome (or Chromium-based browser like Edge, Brave, Arc) - desktop

  • • Windows, macOS or Linux
  • • An OpenRouter API key for model calls (free models available)
How updates work - 3 channels
RecommendedChrome Web StoreAutomatic

Publish the extension to the Chrome Web Store once. From then on Chrome downloads and installs every new version automatically - users never download again. This is the only fully automatic channel for regular users.

Enterprise / managed devicesAutomatic

A signed CRX + update manifest is hosted here (/api/extension/update.xml). Devices managed by policy (Windows registry, Mac/Linux external-extension JSON, or GPO) point Chrome at that URL - Chrome then auto-updates the extension like any enterprise app.

Load unpacked / ZIP (current)Manual

This install method cannot auto-update - Chrome's platform rule, not something a website can change. When a new version is released, the extension shows an update banner with a download link; you reload it in Chrome (settings and data are preserved). The popup always tells you when a new version is out.

The version check is live: open the extension's Updates view and it shows the latest release the moment one ships.

Setting up automatic updates (managed devices)

For organizations or advanced users who want Chrome to update the extension without any manual download, install the signed CRX via Chrome policy. Chrome then polls /api/extension/update.xml and installs new versions automatically. Current extension ID: d652b9f84bff2771e714d1f7538d9027

First install downloads the CRX from the update URL; every later release is applied automatically by Chrome. Chrome Web Store remains the simplest path for consumer machines.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

Common issues and the exact fix.

The extension isn't showing after loading
Make sure you selected the folder that contains manifest.json directly (not a parent folder or a nested copy). Then reload the extension on the extensions page and refresh any open tabs.
"Could not establish connection" when clicking Extract
Reload the extension from chrome://extensions and refresh the page you are working on. If it persists, reinstall from the latest ZIP.
The extension says "Sign in required"
That is expected - an account is required to use the extension. Create a free account on the log in page, then reopen the extension.
Model calls fail with a rate limit error
Free OpenRouter models are frequently congested. The extension retries and falls through the model chain automatically - try again in a moment, or add a paid-tier API key.
How do I update when a new version is released?
It depends on how it was installed. Load-unpacked / ZIP installs cannot auto-update (Chrome platform rule): download the latest ZIP from this page, then on chrome://extensions click "Reload" - settings and data are kept. Managed devices using the signed CRX + update URL above update automatically, and a Chrome Web Store release would update itself. The extension's Updates view always shows when a new version is available.
